Billings, Montana-based First Interstate Bank System, Inc. is a financial holding company. It owns First Interstate Bank, a community bank with facilities in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming.
When Homer Scott, Sr., bought the Bank of Commerce in Sheridan, Wyoming, in 1968, he founded First Interstate Bank. In 1971, Scott founded the corporation in Montana, and over the next ten years, he purchased two additional banks and founded six new ones in Montana and Wyoming.
In 1984, the firm signed a franchise arrangement to utilize the First Interstate Bank name and logo with First Interstate Bancorp, a multi-state bank holding corporation based in Los Angeles, California.
Wells Fargo bought First Interstate Bancorp, not First Interstate Bank, in 1996. Instead, the Montana group was able to get the well-known First Interstate name and emblem rights. The corporation maintained the right to use the First Interstate name and emblem in all 50 states in 2017.
Through the new branch openings and acquisitions, First Interstate had grown to 42 locations by the end of 1999.
